China’s order on travel agencies to stop selling tour packages to Korea takes effect

China’s policy of ordering its travel agencies
to stop selling group tour packages to Korea will reportedly come into force on this Wednesday. Starting today,… only Chinese individuals
who book their own trip and obtain their own visa will be able to come to Korea. The measure is part of the economic retaliation
Beijing has been waging on Korea since the deployment of the U.S. missile defense system
THAAD started last week. China strongly opposes Seoul’s decision to
deploy THAAD, claiming the system’s radar could be used to spy on its military. Since the vast majority of Chinese tourists
come to Korea on group tours,… the number of Chinese coming here is forecast to drop
sharply. The sudden plunge in visitors from China is
expected to hurt several sectors of the Korean economy that are heavily reliant on their
tourist dollars.
