Gangtok Sikkim Tour | Lachen Gurudongmar Lake Trip | 17800 ft | Part 1

It’s 3 a.m. at Lachen, North Sikkim. And we are on the way to Gurudongmar Lake. There is no light except the headlight of
our car. At last its dawn. And watch the first sunshine of the day on
the snow peaks. Its really wonderful. It’s too cold. And believe me, last night I went to sleep
wearing my jackets, woolen cap and my gloves. And still shivering. Last night we stayed at a hotel at Lachen. Lachen is a village in North Sikkim. Its 108 kilometer from Gangtok. To visit Gurudongmar Lake you have to stay
one night at Lachen. The lake can be reached by road from Lachen
via Thangu. Thangu is almost half-way between Lachen and
Gurudongmar Lake. We will take our breakfast there at Thangu. We are taking as many stopovers as possible. This is to acclimatize with the altitude. Gurudongmar Lake is at 17800 feet. Remember, to
reach Gurudongmar Lake start as early as possible. And try to reach there by 9 a.m. in the morning. After that very strong winds starts blow and
weather becomes unpredictable. Gurudongmar Lake is very close to China border. Just 5 kilometer south of China. So you will notice the presence of Indian
Army all along the route. To our left is the Lachen River. Lachen river flows along the eastern boundary
of Khangchendzonga National Park. Remember Mt Khangchendzonga, the third highest
peak of the world is just 40 kilometer south-west from here. Mt. Kumbhakarna, Mt, Pandim, Kirat Chuli are
some other famous peaks located in the Khangchendzonga National Park
along with Mt. Khangchendzonga which is the highest peak of India. Keep in mind, eastern part of the Khangchendzonga
National Park is in India and the western half of the Park is at Nepal. This is Lachen River or Lachen Chu. Chu Means river. Lachen river will meet with Lachung river
that flows through Yumthang valley at Chumthang and combine together to form
the river Teesta. Lachen was nearly at 10000 feet. Now we have climbed uo to 13000 feet. And watch how the treeline is gradually changing. As we go up futher the tree line will gradually
vanish. You need permit to travel in North Sikkim
Santosh arranged all of these for us. Santosh is our guide cum driver in our entire
North Sikkim tour. Santosh is a also very careful driver. And you must be so when driving on the roads
of North Sikkim. Remember to carry the original photo Identity

identity card at Nathula. We have almost reahed Thangu. Thangu is at 14000 feet
and the last village before the Gurudongmar Lake. We will have our breakfast here. Gurudongmar Lake is one of the highest lakes
in the world and in India, located at an altitude of 17,800 ft. And you should not climb at 18000 feet in
empty stomack. The sky is deep blue here. Our breakfast is over. We will soon leave Thangu village and
gradually climb to the eastern part of the Tibetan Plateau. The landscape is similar to Ladakh. Because both Ladakh and Gurudongmar Lake are
situated on the Tibetian Plateu. Ladakh is on the western part of the Tibetan
Plateau and Gurudongmar Lake is on the eastern part
of the Tibetal Plateau. Watch Part 2 for the exciting journey to Gurudongmar
