There’s just a few things I could tell you) Actually we do tip but usually it’s when the service is very good. Like an extra. And don’t worry because style is only an issue if you want to go to exclusive places! we do eat pizza with our hands and usually if you eat with knife and fork you look funny, but I mean do as you wishTrains are late. Always late. We are Italians. Not Japanese And yes. Never ask for pasta and meat together + coffee with the meal is a BIIG no noBreakfast depends on the place you go to, usually in the south we have larger meals, while in the north it’s simpler. July 27, 2019 Reply Giacomo Bechini I am italian and I can assure you that eating pizza with your hands is perfectly fine: no one’s gonna strangle you or anything. The only places in which i would recommend to eat w/ fork and knife are fancy/expensive restaurants. July 27, 2019 Reply alfolla The tip thing is not correct, we do tip. We just don't have a standard in tips. The "coperto" is supposed to be the price for clean glasses , bread and so on. A robbery. July 29, 2019 Reply djohnny21 You did not mention southern Italy . Trust me , the most beautiful beaches in Sicily , Campania , Puglia , Sardegna , Calabria . The food is very good . Not your average pasta but the best Italian junk food . The reason why you don 't tip in Italy is because here being a waiter is considered a "serious" profession, so leaving a few buck would look like "charity". Sometimes though you would see a jar for tips in bars , where the waiters are usually just students trying to make some extra bucks. One good "tip" for money and restaurant would instead be: if you are charged , say, 48,50 euros just give 50 and say keep the change, or you will look stingy.4) most italians did not study foreign languages well, especially the old folks, so do not speak louder, but do speak slow to try to make them understand. And yes knowing a few words helps, because it shows that you made a little effort. Also don' t be arrogant and expect that people should know your language5) entering churches has nothing to do with fashion. You will be denied entry if your are showing too much skin, but that has to do with the catholic church sexophobia not with fashion. So feel free to dress as it suits you best, as long as you are not going to some kind of formal event.6) yes absolutely there are a lot of "minor" fantastic places to see.. Siena , Orvieto, Lucca, Vicenza, Verona , Bari, Catania, Palermo, Napoli…7) Yes we do not share pizza, but we do eat it with our hands. You 'll see both ways to eat it, and in general women tend to be more "polite"8) yes Freccia train are rip offs for short trips. 9) yes spaghetti and meat balls, maccaroni and cheese are FAKE italian food . Spaghetti bolognese also are FAKEs. We have "tagliatelle al ragu'" wich are a typical food choice in Bologna and elsewhere, but no, "spaghetti bolognese" in not even correct italian language.10) what we eat for breakfast is coffe and and croissant. Cookies and bread and butter is what you get in hotels.11) Yes we have very little space here so do pack light! Also yes we are lively and friendly but do no be too loud either in the trains or hotels on even on the street.. we italian care for "style" even in day to day behaviour.. August 10, 2019 Reply Marco Maccio' Grazie August 10, 2019 Reply Maurizio In naples eating pizza with hands it's a must August 10, 2019 Reply Alessandro Guarda As Italian I've to correct you of few things which are important:1) to go to churches it's not a matter of how well dress you are, it's a matter of don't wear shorts or have naked shoulders2) We eat pizza with hands: the rule is the "3P" one, that means that 3 things are allowed to be eaten with hands and they are "Pane Pizza Pollo" (bread, pizza and chicken). BUT only Pizza is allowed to be eaten with hands when you are in a Pizzeria. Better not in a restaurant (which, by the way, rarely offer Pizza as that's Pizzeria's domain).3) Spaghetti bolognese DO NOT EXIST! That's when you see you are in a tourist place!!! If you want pasta with meat then you need to order "ragù" and tagliatelle are a much better type of pasta then spaghetti for it. Oh, and leave that crappy "macaroni cheese" in your country please. Here if you want to eat something with pasta&cheese which is good then go for "cacio e pepe" near Rome, or "pasta ai 4 formaggi e speck" (also without speck) which has 4 different cheeses inside. Actually don't order meatball at all. They are good for when you are a guest to my grandmother but not in ANY restaurant…4) restaurants opening times are VERY different between areas of Italy: in the North (like Milan, Turin, Veneto area…) we usually have lunch at 12.30PM and dinner at around 7.30PM, so the restaurants most likely open at 12 and at 7 and, before they are close, the kitchen close like at 2PM and 10PM in the evening. So even if they are open, they'll NOT serve you anything. In the South they eat later: I'm not so familiar but let's say all is shifted of 1.5 to 2h in advance, so the estaurants most likely open at 13 and at 8 and, before they are close, the kitchen close like at 3PM and 12AM in the evening. The centre Italy is halfway. Giving a little tip is a wonderful thing for them. (I've been both barista and waitress) August 14, 2019 Reply Dan Matthews Never order a capuccino or any other milk-based drink after 10am! Italians believe that drinking milk will mess up the ability to digest food properly. So having a cappuccino at any time after breakfast is unthinkable. I stayed near Via Ghibellina and I can confirm the Pizza was fresh, the pasta was fresh and all at a fairly decent price considering how close to the centre. Yes, you go anywhere in the world, rural food may be more "authentic" but does it ensure good service and food? I'm sure you're correct about your points being in Rome, that is tourist trap central (and I thought Florence would be the same), but as long as you use your brain (and google) you can suss it out yourself … also, don't tell people how to eat, it's just stupid. Italians don't tip because they are rude and stingy, every single waiter or bartender I ever met thinks the same. We get all of our tips only from foreinger tourists and fellow waiters/bartenders. The 1,50/2€ "tip" we all pay in restaurants is a stupid old habit, it goes right in the restaurant owner's pockets, it made sense a few decades ago, but now it doesn't anymore, you basically pay more for nothing and waiters are sill paid less than they should. You'll find a hell of a lot of good deals for less money than in High street shops. I'm Italian and I do that happily. Point 6: Try "Bergamino" in Reggio Calabria while you are in the most beautiful km of Italy (the longbeach). Bring rollerblades, skate, monoscooter, whatever you have for a nice big pavement! Just don't consume in the "lido kiosks" because they are extortionate! Try the cocktail "Bitter Giuseppe". August 30, 2019 Reply Thomas Samoht Eating pizza with cutlery?
